I ran out of cough syrup and wanted to quit coughing for a few hours, so I made the trip, not far from my home, expecting to see just a few sick people trickling in and out.

But, to my surprise, it was a madhouse! There was hardly a parking place to be had, all three registers were going with long lines at each one. There were pages overhead for managers to assist with one thing or another, but they were also tied up helping customers.

What I expected to be a quick trip took way longer than anticipated and as a result of waiting in line, I purchased more crap that I didn't need out of sheer boredom.

Then, I saw it. (cue dramatic music)

There it was, sitting up high on a shelf in front of the windows. Sitting there companionably with his brothers in arms. Waiting. Just waiting. Staring at me.

No longer is one holiday over with before the promotion and propaganda is slid into place for the next one.

Is it no wonder we're sick of holiday promotion, no matter what holiday it is? I'd like to enjoy one before the next one is crammed down my throat, wouldn't you?

Unfortunately, I think I'm in the minority in this desire.

So instead of getting ready for the next holiday, which is New Year's Day, I'm trying to get through and over this one before the promotional advertising heads our way.
I'm not a stick in the mud, or a Grinch, or an Ebeneezer. I do like the holidays, but it seems that the buying has outpaced our enjoyment of family and friends and some down time that we desperately need these days.

I asked not to have presents this year, and last year, but I did receive a few tokens, which I appreciated and could use. For me, at this time in life, I'd rather have someone spend their time with me, or do something for, or with, me than have a present I don't really need or then feel obligated to reciprocate.

Anyway, that's my holiday observation.
Did you have any that you'd like to share?
New Release Today!Hi everyone,
I'm so excited to let you know that my new book is out today! This is a book that I wrote last year for NANO. If you don't know what that is, I'll explain. It's a group of people, world-wide, who try (and many succeed) to write a complete book of at least 50,000 words in one month.
Yes, you read that right: ONE month.
This book just gushed out of my brain and landed on the computer screen in a big mess, but after revising it several times, it was in condition that I could submit to my editor in London. She loved it and here it is, ready for you to read and hopefully love as well.
This book is set in Williamsburg, VA, a town I dearly love. If you've ever been around this town, the historic district or anywhere in Virginia, I think you'll like this book.
Give it a try.
If you've never read a medical romance, here's an opportunity to give it a try as well. The stories are set in and around the medical field, but vary in degree of how much medical details is in the books. The main story is one of love.
Drop a line and let me know how you like the book.

If none of those work for you, just
Goggle it! This was a book that was difficult getting to my
editor. It was nearly complete when my laptop and backup USB drives
were stolen! (This was a harsh lesson in cloud backup) It was an
awful experience and one that took a while to get through. None of my
belongings were recovered from the burglary, and just the other day I
discovered another item that was stolen. A small shop vac. Of all
things. That was easily replaceable, but my grandmother's Italian
cameo necklace from WWII was not.

In any case, this book was a complete
rewrite, and I poured a lot of sweat, energy and curse words into it.
It is set in my adoptive home state of New Mexico, which is called
The Land Of Enchantment, and I can see why. After coming to NM to
stay for only 2 months for a nursing assignment, I returned twice
more, then stayed, and I've been here for seventeen years. When some
people come to NM they stay forever.

Rebel Taylor, my heroine, comes to New
Mexico in much the same way that I did, on a travel assignment and
meets the hero of her dreams. She's introduced to the desert, green
chile (that's how we spell it here), flying in a small airplane and
to the support of people she never knew was possible.

I think you'll enjoy the journey that
Rebel takes from being alone in the world, overcoming a deep grief
and healing among people who truly care about her. We can all relate
to some of that.

If you enjoy the book, please go to one
(or all!) of the websites and put up a review for me. I don't get too
many reviews and they all help, really.

Love

it's been ages since I've sent out a blog, so I thought I'd catch you up on my upcoming releases. There will be two books out this year! The first one, Her Family For Keeps, will be out in July and the second, Safe In The Surgeon's Arms, will be out in October. When the cover art is available, I will let you know.
If you'd like to preorder from Amazon.com as an ebook here are the links:

So after working hard to get these two books out it's back to brainstorming for the next book.
Both of these ideas came out of the blue and my brain seemed to already know the stories were inside of me, I just had to write them!

Check back soon for another update.
Cheers!
The Greek doctor is also inspired by friends who are Greek, but I've taken a few liberties with their names and histories.

I hope you enjoy this book, because I sure love it. Along with this, I have created a trailer that is a picture/slideshow sort of thingie to promote the book. It's on youtube and is safe to view. Here's the link, just click on it and it should play. The trailer is long, but I enjoyed creating it and it really tells the story in pictures of my book.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiL8m2zUFUs

Happy reading!
Molly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-47323348253382153722009-02-07T20:14:00.000-08:002009-02-07T20:44:20.616-08:00Reality In Romance Books-Is There Such A Thing? What do you read romances for? I started out as a teen reading romances because that's what my friends were reading. Then I fell in love with the wonderful, escapist stories. Over the many (many!) years since, I've stuck with romances for the most part because the authors told such wonderful stories that I could relate to. I wanted to become that heroine or experience her story as told by the author.

My tastes in reading varies. I read everything: suspense, romantic suspense, paranormal, historical, and erotic. I read everything except literary or mystery for the most part. Don't like first person stories. The time I limit myself on reading is when I'm writing a new book of my own. What I've noticed in the last few years that publishing houses seem to be pushing stories and writers farther than ever before. No one can have a simple werewolf or vampire story any more. It's got the be the most fantastical, outrageous, brutal, unbelievable story ever written with myths that are so complicated the reader can't keep up with the story line without a companion book or taking notes.

Has anyone else noticed this trend? I recently read two books by different authors, published by the same house. They must either have the same agent and/or the same editors. Both books were so depthy, steeped in their other-world cultures that they were frankly a pain to read. I don't want to have to take notes in order to remember who did what to whom, why this particular magical component won't work against what particular villain because he's immune to whatever because he once drank from the lake of villain-immunity. Really, it's starting to get that complicated.

I honestly, am not interested in such wildly complicated stories because it's exhausting to read them. It's a book. It's a story. It's not life, andthese two books are going to go into the pile for my writer's group giveaway. I won't keep them. Many times I SKIPPED through the mind-numbing scenes. That's not the essential part of the story for me as a reader. I want to know what's going on between the hero and the heroine and what's going to be their struggle. The other stuff interferes to a degree in what I'm reading that book for.

And it's getting annoying because it seems that more and more good stories are getting buried in the craziest plots, the wildest sexual encounters with highly improbable mythical creatures, and the beauty of a good story becomes lost.

Is this really what readers are preferring these days? Am I being old fashioned in my search for a wonderful story that doesn't depend on gimicks or other-worldly legends and myths to hold it up? Is the story really about the story, or is it about all of the bells and whistles that accompany a good story?

I wonder if this is what the author had in mind when he/she sat down to write the original story. Was it what the publisher shaped it into or is it the demands of the marketplace that makes necessary these types of stories?

I don't have the answer to this and I'm only speculating based on my own interests. If one person has this opinion, surely there are more with the same interests.
I'd love to hear what readers think about this topic.Molly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-72864212435372050992008-10-12T09:26:00.000-07:002008-10-12T09:42:58.201-07:00New book is out!

hi all,

just an FYI that my new book is out at Mills & Boon. This is my third book, The Emergency Doctor's Chosen Bride. It's set in a fictitious town in the state of Virginia, USA, but the setting is based on my experiences living in Charlottesville, Virginia, for 3 years. This is the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, in the midst of The Blue Ridge Mountain chain. Absolutely beautiful country and fantastic history are at the heart of this location.

So this is where I've plunked down my hero and heroine, given them each a past that they must overcome in order to find the path to their future. Being a girl from the wrong side of the tracks and falling in love with a physician who was born in a bucket of money, there's bound to be some issues. But seeing the goodness in each other is what makes this story a winner.

I hope you like it and visit my website at www.mollyevans.com

I have built a trailer for this story. If you don't know, a trailer is a series of photos, set with music, that depict the written story of the book. It was fun making this up and I hope to do one for every book I write now. The title is: The Emergency Doctor's Chosen Bride. It's not bad. It's not great. Titles are in the realm of of the publisher and they (for the medicals) choose the titles. When I first started writing medicals, I was a bit shocked at the titles. They were just so. . . not-American-sounding. My first book for Mills and Boon medicals I titled: Runaway Nurse. I thought that said something about the book, would intrigue the reader enough to pick up the book and read the back blurb. But Runaway Nurse wasn't appealing to the UK editors and they changed it to, The Surgeon's Marriage Proposal.

What did that mean? I couldn't pick titles well enough? I was so nervous and excited when my editor called me that I really didn't care at the moment what it was called as long as they accepted it and paid me for it. They did and the book has gone on to be published in romance, medical romance both hard and paperback, large print hardback and French in a duet wtih another book and author.

So what does that tell me?

Not to be married to my titles. I use a working title, the most recent of which was Scars, another was Small Town Story. It gives me a little bit of focus every time I open the computer to work on it. In the end the publisher and editors are the ones who make some of the decisions regarding my books, they create the titles and also are the ones who pay me. So I'm okay with it.

Thanks for reading my blog and reading my books. Without the fans, we writers wouldn't be out here.

Molly Evans
Molly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-66517219465964972732008-07-15T07:08:00.000-07:002008-07-15T07:27:52.272-07:00Getting In Touch With Your Inner Pirate
Who doesn't love a good pirate story? Unfortunately, they've been pretty scarce until the recent Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3 sailed across the big screen. These movies have been very successful. Though fun to watch, there are things to be learned from each of these movies that can help improve your writing, things that will help bring out the inner pirate hiding inside of you.
Lately, I've been watching the movies while wearing a pirate medallion, skeleton earrings, and saying “arrr” a lot. I've even made myself a purse from pirate fabrics. So what, right? What this has done has enabled me to get in touch with my inner pirate and this hopefully translates to my writing.
What can we learn from watching POTC over and over? Aside from the obvious-Johnny and Orlando are totally hot-writers and pirates have many things in common. I've listed a few of them below. See if you can discover others hiding within you.
--Be passionate about everything.
--There must be something worth dying for, worth claiming as your own ,and worth giving up your old life/habits for.
--There must be action, there must be sweat, and even a few tears.
--If you're afraid, you can't show it. Never let the enemy see fear in your eyes.
--Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. If none are coming, you need to make something happen to change your current situation.
--Honor and integrity do not come without a price.
These are values not often taught in the film industry, but are embraced by the outlaws of society-the pirates.
As writers, how can we use these teachings of pirate characters?
For one, dress the part. I find when I wear my pirate attire, minimal though it is, I take on an entirely different attitude than my usual charming self. I'm bolder, more daring, and take more risks in my writing than usual.
Adventure and discovery: A pirate captain is always on the lookout for some new, undiscovered artifact, treasure, jewel or booty. Discover a new layer in your story that has been hidden. Is there an adventure for your characters to be had that deviates from the original plan you had mapped out for them? Can you take them through waters previously uncharted in your synopsis? (And don't forget about some unplanned booty!)
--Permit yourself to be wild and uncharted, fierce and deadly, in your writing.
--Learn to sail foreign waters. You may find success outside your comfort zone.
--Take no prisoners.
--Throw your hat in the air!
--Laugh, even when you're fighting the bad guys, enjoy it.
--Drink lots of rum. (Well, in moderation anyway)
--Lie on a beach once in a while and soak up the sun. (We all need more Vitamin D anyway)
--Curse a lot when things go wrong
--Raise a ruckus when there are things to celebrate—even the small stuff.
--Never, ever make a deal with a sea monster.
Being a pirate is mostly about attitude and making other people believe you're a pirate. Didn't Jack Sparrow introduce himself as Captain Jack Sparrow each and every time? He always corrected those who didn't address him properly. Even without a ship we believe he is Captain Jack because he makes us believe it with every breath he takes. Even without a contract you are a writer. It is your job to make us believe it. Not that you have to go to the lengths Sparrow does to get what he wants, but get used to thinking of yourself as a writer.
I just really wish I had his compass.
Other things to learn from pirates:
The art of negotiation is truly an art and it's never the same twice.
There are very few rules to being a pirate. Forget the rules and write.
Evolution of Character. Will Turner changed the most in these stories, but he still always maintained his honor and his integrity. Even though he became an undead creature enslaved to the sea for an undetermined period of time, he was still totally hot and true to his cause.
May the trade winds always keep you on the right course. May there always be enough rum, and may there always be enough booty (whatever kind you like) to satisfy you.
So put on your pirate hat, crank up the POC soundtrack, and get in touch with your inner pirate.
ARRRRRRRRRRR!
Molly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-58247672274610778392008-01-20T10:30:00.000-08:002008-01-20T10:34:10.154-08:00After The Call-The First YearAround October 1st, 2007, I realized that a year had passed since I received the call from my editor, Jenny Hutton, with an offer to buy my first book. Then I stopped and lived in the moment for a while, remembering how I had felt at the time. How I still feel when thinking of that milestone in my life.
Jenny had requested several revisions on this first manuscript before she bought it, but I just couldn't "get" what she meant. I know we were both talking the same language, and I understood the words, but their meaning and what I was supposed to do with them left me mystified. I thought I knew what the word revisions meant, but after doing my version of revision, Jenny still came back with more, and I realized I was just word-smithing, not revising. I could hear the frustration in her emails that I wasn't getting "it" whatever "it" was.
And then finally, the epiphinal moment came. I understood what Jenny wanted and went to town snipping and hacking away at my manuscript, removing large chunks of text that just didn't need to be there and slowed down the story. That did it. She bought the book.
Selling your first book is no easy task. I think I actually had more angst over the second book than with the first one. With the first one it was at least a complete project. With the second book it was a whole new concept that was born, brainstormed, and written/revised within a few months, not the luxury I had had of a year or so with the first book.
Can I do it? Can I do it again? Will I forget everything I know about writing? Do I know anything about writing? It all ran through my head as I waited for Jenny to get back to me on revisions for the second book. It was worse than the first book! At least that's what I thought. But going through her revision letter one paragraph at a time, breaking it down into manageable bites, helped immensely. I could do this, one thing at a time, even though there were multiple issues with it.
Out of the 210 pages, I deleted 75 pages and rewrote them. Tackling this round of revisions took about a month to accomplish, but it was worth the time and the mental energy it took, because I learned more from the revisions than I did from the original writing of the book.
Jenny accepted the revisions with enthusiasm stating that I had written a "real cracker of a book."
The things I've learned over the last year of being published are many, but some of the most important ones I want to share with you all.
Take your ego out of it. This endeavor isn't about your ego. If it is about ego, then you need to rethink exactly why you are writing and what you hope to get out of it. The rewards are few and far between, though when you get them, they certainly are wonderful. I've often heard people say that "I've final-ed" or "I've won" in a contest. YOU haven't final-ed, it's your manuscript that has. Step back and let the manuscript speak for itself. Not that you shouldn't celebrate your successes, you should, but make sure you leave the ego behind and write the best book you can.
This isn't your baby. This is an inanimate object, an artifact, and needs to be treated as such. No one else cares whether you've struggled for weeks, months, or years on a book, except you. What the editor cares about is: can I sell this book? That's what you need to focus on and DO! If the editor asks for revisions or a rewrite, do it. That leads to a sale and sets the tone for an ongoing relationship with this editor who will buy future books from you if she/he can work with you. If the editor wants to change the story, do it. That also leads to a sale. Working with an editor and having a receptive, open attitude is what leads to a career.
Be Bold! Assertive. Confident. Happy. Smile. Enjoy. Celebrate. Take chances. Believe in yourself and your ability. Spend time learning the craft.
Never be: Afraid. Aggressive. Arrogant. Unhappy. Difficult. Depressed. Make an editor roll her eyes. Too much artist, not enough business.
Don't get attached to titles.
Learning to write with a global voice. One of the unusual experiences has been writing as an American for a largely Eur/Aus/NZ audience. What to me may seem mundane, may actually be exotic to others.
Flexibility has taken on new meaning.
Being open minded has taken on new meaning.
Setting goals (Thanks Barb, Sheley, Gabi) is important. A six month, a 12 month, and a five year goal plan keep you focused.
Creativity is important, so find little ways to produce something that is creative because we have to wait so long to have an end product (Yes, it's a product, not your baby) with our writing. I've recently learned to make cards. Takes anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour to make a tiny work of art.
Exercise. I despise exercise with a passion, but it's become necessary for me on an almost daily basis, so I'm learning to accept the need in my life. But I still hate it and I am enjoying my right to hate it.
Don't overdo the chocolate-you can make yourself sick and will have to do #11 more.
Celebrate every chapter, every scene, as progress toward the end. So what if it isn't perfect! The end product won't be perfect either, because your editor and the line editor will be messing with it long after you've turned it in anyway. Accept and move on to the next project.
Learn about and accept that this is a business. If you are in it for publication and to make money you must learn the business end of this. After all, this is about money. That's not jaded, that's just a fact. If the editor doesn't believe that your manuscript (yes, it's just a manuscript at this point, not a book) won't sell, she won't buy it no matter how much merit you think it has.
Above all, celebrate your writing successes, no matter the size.
Keep writing! Never give up.
Molly EvansMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-79263182619565030702008-01-01T18:02:00.000-08:002008-01-01T18:12:30.008-08:00Happy New Year! It's late, but it's still the first day of the new year. This is the day we all think about changing something in our lives, hopefully for the better. And I'm no different. I want to be thinner, happier, work less, play more, and write every single day in 2008. Who knows if I'll be able to accomplish any of these things, but I'm sure going to try.
To accomplish anything in life, there are times that you must push yourself out of your comfort zone, and I'm working on that right now. Being in a comfort zone is too, well . . . comfortable. We must stretch our our boundaries or we will never know what we are capable of. That applies to our work life and our home life and our writing lives.
We strive to fit in and then we strive to be different. Live outside the box. Live large. Live boldly in brilliant color. Climb to your highest peak of creativity and leap off of it.
You will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
MollyMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-17756796762842900432007-11-20T16:32:00.000-08:002007-11-20T16:56:54.697-08:00ThanksgivingWhat am I thankful for this year? I'm darned thankful that my latest submission to Harlequin Mills & Boon has been accepted by my editor! Whew, what a relief. Just in time to be thankful on Thursday.
I have to say I'm sorry for not keeping up with the blog, though. I'll try to do better! My time has been divided, not evenly, with work as a hospice nurse, a mom, a wife, and a writer, plus trying to get all of the things in that we must do in life. Making my own Christmas/holiday cards this year has been on the list, but as of right now, I might get them done by next year.
Thanks to those who have kept up with me. My new book is going to be: The Emergency Doctor's Chosen Bride. The next book though will be out soon, in Feb 2008 and that is: The Nurses' Little Miracle. Look for it in UK bookstores and you can order online at: www.millsandboon.uk.com
love MollyMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-63358920394539804782007-05-16T20:03:00.000-07:002007-05-16T20:10:56.935-07:00First Book Is Out! Amazon.comHappy May everyone. The month has finally arrived and my first book in hardback is available at www.amazon.co.uk or via my website: www.mollyevans.com and click on the picture of the book. The blue cover is of the paperback which will be out in July.
This is a new look for the Medical Romance line and I love it! I am glad that The Surgeon's Marriage Proposal was included in the new covers.
I've finished my second book now, which will be out next Feb and is titled: The Nurse's Little Miracle. I'm thrilled that this book was accepted and am working hard on the next book. With some luck and hard work, I hope to have four books out next year, but we'll see.
2008 is also the 100th anniversary for the publisher, Harlequin Mills & Boon, so there are bound to be celebrations all year long.
Join us in happy reading!
MollyMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-18938753436116383032007-04-13T14:54:00.000-07:002007-04-13T19:12:48.313-07:00My first contract--Getting It!Today I had the best news from my editor at Mills & Boon. She's thrilled with my latest book and has made the offer to buy it. It will be titled: The Nurse's Little Miracle and will be out around March 2008. She's also offered me a two book contract, which is a first for me, too. That's such a thrill. My first contract!
So many things in life are little things. But it's important to celebrate the little things and the big things. Or maybe that was just an excuse to have my husband take me out to dinner to celebrate!
The biggest part that pleased me is that I feel as if I finally "got it." The writing part, the editing part, the revising part. All of it. Each part is important on its own, but all together to make the final package worth while, it what counts in the long run. Some of us take longer than others to get it and I sure took enough time, too. Ten years to be exact. Ten years to "get it!"
But it was worth it. Never ever quit. Because at the end you'll have, as my editor puts it: a cracker of a story! that the publisher will put their money up for.
Happy writing,
love,
Molly EvansMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-45263556769808971762007-03-31T15:57:00.000-07:002007-03-31T19:28:38.813-07:00Medical Romance-What It's All AboutSo you've heard of medical romances, even heard that two are nominated for RWA's prestigous Rita award, but . . . what are they?
With the success of shows such as ER, House, Bones, CSI, and others, medical romances are taking off. But they've been around for about thirty years. So why haven't you heard of them? They are primarily distributed in the UK and not available in bookstores in North America. (This is a hint to start sending letters to Harlequin's offices to ask for NA distribution).
Medical romances rock! They take the best of romance and the best from medical shows and spin them together into the most awesome, emotion packed short fiction you've ever read.
For the curious, keep your eyes peeled for The Surgeon's Marriage Proposal, by yours truly, Molly Evans. This book is available as a hardback in May and then in paperback in July. I'm so fortunate that it's coming out in both formats.
For other medials available right now, check out www.eharlequin.com and click on Harlequin scroll down to medicals and buy a few good reads.
MollyMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-1170386396443755192007-02-01T19:15:00.000-08:002007-02-01T19:19:56.456-08:00Happy Birthday to Mollywell, it's a little bit late now, but my birthday was the end of January. In the midst of it, I was on a deadline for my second book. The good news is that I did get that second book completed and out the door (via email) to my editor. Whew! Big sigh, there.
I do think that perhaps the second book had more angst surrounding it than I had with the first book. Although I wanted to sell that book very badly, I was more relaxed about the writing. This time I took on a challenge as well as a deadline (self imposed) and wanted to do it right. At first I thought the book was only going to be about half the length I needed it to be, but as I wrote it and added the dimensions and emotional depth required, it made it over the page count! Another golden moment.
So keep those good vibes coming my way that the second book is accepted as easily as the first. I'm prepared for a ten page revision letter, but I've done it once, I know I can do it again!
love
MollyMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-1166925526962121742006-12-23T17:40:00.000-08:002006-12-23T17:58:46.970-08:00Merry Christmas To Molly!Just a few days before Christmas now, but last week I received my present from Harlequin Mills & Boon. My first advance check came in the mail. Yippee.
Now I'm hard at work on my second book. That sounds so exciting to say that! But I love writing. Writing fulfills some creative need I have. Of course, it's a long time to get that satisfaction that such an accomplishment brings. While I'm waiting for that to happen I craft when I have time. Mostly I make cards, envelopes, quilt and knit. Not too much time for that lately between working, taking care of my 6 year old, being a wife, making a lame attempt at house keeping, meeting with my critique group every two weeks and writing.
My editor is Jenny Hutton and she's a lovely woman. There is an interview with her at:
http://pinkheartsociety.blogspot.com/search/label/jenny%20hutton
I am very fortunate to have found Jenny. Or maybe she found me, I'm not sure which. In any case, my manuscript was in the slush pile sitting on her shelf for many months before she read it. Thankfully, she didn't pass on it and worked with me to polish it to where it was ready for publication. I hope she doesn't have to work so hard on this next book!
Now I need to get back to the writing part for a while. My goal is to have this rough draft finished by the end of December. I have a few days left and about 70 pages to write. I think I can manage it.
Happy Holidays, whatever they are, to everyone who happens by my little blogspot.
MollyMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-1162911073932795472006-11-07T06:50:00.000-08:002006-11-07T06:51:13.940-08:00Progress as a first time author--Line Edits!Well, I received my line edits. That is a manuscript that is printed out much as you would on your own computer, but on the left side, each page is assigned a number. This makes it easier for everyone to find the errors that need to be corrected before it goes to press. There were a few what I call "European-isms" that I found. Since the book will primarly be available in Europe and Australia, they get to have those changes. One example was, Respiratory Therapist was changed to Respiratorist. I don't even know if that's a word, but I marked it and sent it back. The next phase is galleys and though I haven't seen one, I hear they look more like a real book. An author can send galleys to reviewers ahead of the final print book. I think that will be the most exciting time. When I have that first book in my hands and can open it, read it, smell it and savor the experience for the very first time, will be the thrill of a life time. Then, I get to do it all over again!
Happy reading,
MollyMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36124564.post-1161014032296547572006-10-16T08:48:00.000-07:002006-10-16T08:53:52.303-07:00Molly Evans is born!About two weeks ago I received a call from a lovely editor at Harlequin Mills & Boon in London. She wished to buy my book! Of course, I said, "uh, yeah, go ahead and buy my book." Really, it was a thrill to have this discussion. It's a discussion that every author craves. The Call! Although I have published an ebook and a few short stories, this is the first time I feel like a "real" writer, though I have been writing for many years.
Receiving "The Call" is the most special time in writer's life. Someone out there thinks that what you write is good enough for others to read and they are putting their money into it. So anyone who is writing with the hope/intent of publication, my best advice to you is this: never give up.
I'm off now onto my next book, which will also be a medical romance. Hey with twenty four years of nursing experience, I have a lot to write about!
Happy reading,
Molly EvansMolly Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14353412599195708232noreply@blogger.com1
